Can you tell I took this picture towards the evening time? I began the day drawing again in pencil and of course you can't really see that part, but I also was able to begin painting in the black. I'm still adjusting to how to use water-based house paint, which tends to be thick and runny. I was getting this dry brush look in the beginning and no sensitivity to the brush stroke. So I went and bought a variety of smaller brushes to work on parts like the eyes, and once I began to thin out the paint a bit with water, I was able to get long beautiful brush strokes without having to redip my brush 12 times.

wow. a blog. SWEET!!!!
...and the work is gorgeous. this mural will be an austin landmark.
...and you're doing the black first. interesting. not sure i know how that would work.
Looks good. I'm also curious about putting down the black first.
Well, my strategy is to lay down the black outlines first in a rough way to simply define and clarify the figures. Then I will essentially paint-by-numbers and fill in the the broader shapes with color, being careful not to paint in the white areas. Then I will paint the patterns of darker color over that, which will define the forms better and give a greater sense of depth. Then I shall touch up the white and finally, repaint the black with all the glorious detail.
By the way, thanks da janx. I'm excited to see the result!
